How to Fish: Complete Island Progression Guide

Step by step

1. 1. Island 1: Spidercrab

   Buy the Crab Fishing Rod, complete the beer quest for an Empty Beer Can, and use it to summon Spidercrab. Defeating it gets you a Shell, then a Key and Rudder to sail onward.

2. 2. Island 2: Giant Piranha

   Bring leeches to the island's quest NPC to unlock boss bait. The leeches are a ground pickup near the quest area, not something you catch in the water, so lower the camera and check vegetation and structures instead of the shoreline. Pick up the plain Fishing Rod, the Beginner Lure, and your next inventory slot here. Defeat Giant Piranha to progress.

3. 3. Island 3: Pufferfish & Blue Shark

   Fish sell for more on this island. Fighting Pufferfish in the open can turn into a damage race you lose, so use trees and solid terrain to interrupt its approach and create safe windows to shoot. Defeat Pufferfish to continue progression; separately, the Blue Shark mini-boss can be one-shot with stacked dynamite and unlocks grilling when handed to the grill NPC for a Lighter.

4. 4. Island 4: disputed boss

   The boss here is triggered by catching a Tuna with a boss-tier lure. Its exact name is unconfirmed. See the boss page for the naming conflict. Treat any specific name you see elsewhere as unverified.

5. 5. Island 5: Mutated Bowhead Whale

   The final boss. Fight it with guns until its health is nearly gone, then switch to fists for the killing blow. This matches the official "Handyman" achievement exactly.

Tips

• Each island grants an inventory slot. Don't skip islands even if you're strong enough to survive further out.
• The Blue Shark mini-boss is optional relative to main progression but unlocks a mechanic (grilling) worth getting early.
• New islands unlock from finishing local quests and boss objectives, not from farming money. When you reach a new island, talk to the NPCs there first to find the objective that's actually gating progress.
• Several boss fights drop a distinctive trophy piece (described as a skull, tail, fin, or bone depending on the boss) needed for the quest hand-in. Grab it before selling everything from the fight.
